Dear Parents and Students,

Thank you so much for coming to last week’s Back To School Night! No doubt you are as proud of Star as I am and when we all work together for the children we accomplish a great deal.

Most of us have settled into our “school rhythm” and things are really beginning to take off around here. However, there are so many upcoming events that this letter will be devoted to announcements more than anything else.

On Tuesday, several members of the Student Council will go with a few of us teachers to the Episcopal Ordination of Bishop Elect McElroy. A few years ago I would have hesitated to take students to such an event, but during our Centennial celebrations we were blessed with the presence of Bishop Justice and Archbishop Niederauer. Both of these spiritual leaders showed a great affection for this community, especially the students. I clearly remember Bishop Justice beginning his homily by telling the kids that he was a graduate of Saint Gregory School (one of our Catholic schools in San Mateo). Both he and the Archbishop took the time to speak to so many students and parents that they made a positive impression.

School Pictures will be taken on Wednesday and I am really excited about the new company we’re using. Those of you who were at the Parent Club meeting last May heard the owner explain the process and show the high quality photos they produce.  PLEASE BE SURE YOUR CHILD(REN) are in full uniform for their school picture!!

Wednesday is also our first Parent Club meeting of the year.  I will spend a few minutes explaining the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (all students in grades 2-8 take the ITBS every fall). You are all invited to join us in the auditorium at 7:00 pm. Students whose parents attend will be given a free dress pass to use later in the month.

Next week we have an Open House for parents interested in our Kindergarten (Thursday at 9:00am). Please let your friends, neighbors and coworkers know about this.  Next Friday (Sept 17) is International Night. We invite you all to come and have a fun evening with your “Star family”.

Finally, we welcome the preschool parents whose email addresses were recently added to our mailing list. There are many ways to describe Star of the Sea, but each adjective is followed by “community”. Have a great week.

Sincerely,

Terrence Hanley
